GIRONA AND MALLORCA, CYCLING HEAVENS!

Welcome to our SFIDA Girona – Mallorca trip. We have decided to combine these two amazing cycling destinations on the same trip.

Girona and Mallorca have in common be desired destinations for cyclists from around the world. At the same time, they are quite different…

Girona is a mid-size Catalan city, halfway between the Mediterranean and the Pyrenees, between Barcelona and France. This makes for a great variety of landscapes and cycling options.

At the same time, Girona’s medieval old town, very well preserved and doted with great cafes, restaurants and shops, makes it a great place to wander around when not on your bike.

Girona has become, since the early 2000s, the residence of choice for many non-European professional cyclists, both women and men. The city breathes cycling most of the year.

Mallorca is the biggest island in the Balearic. The Serra de Tramuntana forms the rugged and mountainous north, then has the flatter in the centre and south, is not complicated to know which part we will focus on during our riding there….

With many towns and villages of interest, there’s not a specific area more interesting than others, however, we decided to stay near the capital, Palma de Mallorca, this way we can enjoy some fine dining after great days on the bike.

DAY 1: Welcome to Girona.
Meet the SFIDA Cycling team at the Barcelona Airport (BCN) or a designated hotel nearby.

Once the group is together, we will transfer by van to our hotel in Girona.

Upon arrival, we will proceed with our usual trip presentation, bike build-up and fitting and lunch.

For our first ride in Girona, we will do the Els Angels loop, starting with the most known climbs and closest to Girona, this is a great way to start our riding days in Girona.

Known as “Els Angels”, this beautiful climb will take us to the Santuari de la Mare de Deu dels Angels (translation: Mother of God of the Angels, as you can see, it can’t be a more divine name!). But don’t be fooled by the name, you don’t need to pray to climb this nice mountain road that will take us into the Gavarres mountain range, this is an amazing natural park.

Back in Girona, we will have dinner in town.

Day 1
57km / 950m
CLIMB: Els Angels.
HOTEL: Hotel Palau de Bellavista

DAY 2: Mare de Deu del Mont, beautiful long climb.

For our second ride of the trip, we will start riding from our hotel north of Girona via some very quiet roads. Today we will climb one of the highest climbs near Girona, also one of the most beautiful ones, with amazing 360-degree views from the top.

Known as Mare de Deu del Mont, this climb up to 1,100m goes through some quiet roads up to the summit.

After enjoying the views from the top, we will descend towards Besalu, a well-preserved medieval town where we will have lunch.

Besalu was an important town in the middle ages, it had a lot of cultural and religious activity. Its most distinctive attraction is the 12th-century bridge and the town’s entrance. There are, besides the usual catholic churches, remains of a Jewish mikveh and a medieval synagogue.

From Besalu, we will navigate our way to Girona via Banyoles.

Dinner in Girona.

Day 2
125km / 2,075m
CLIMB: Mare de Deu del Mont.
HOTEL: Hotel Palau de Bellavista

DAY 3: Rocacorba, Girona’s more iconic climb.

Today we will climb up Rocacorba, this is the most iconic climb near Girona. We will make our way to Banyoles in time of coffee, then it will be climbing time.

Rocacorba is another one way climb, meaning that once we reached the top we will descend the same way. This climb is used by professional and cycling aficionados as a test on climbing abilities. There are some steep sections but the climb is mostly a regular gradient between 5-8%.

Our way back to Girona will be the same as yesterday’s.

Dinner in Girona.

Day 3
98km / 1,630m
CLIMB: Rocacorba.
HOTEL:Hotel Palau de Bellavista

DAY 4: Girona – Mallorca!

After breakfast, transfer from our Girona hotel to Barcelona Airport for a short morning flight to Palma de Mallorca.

Once in Palma, we will check in at our hotel for the next five days, have lunch and get ready for a short afternoon ride…or a visit to Palma.

For the ones choosing to ride, we will have a first sample of what is riding in Mallorca’s Serra de Tramuntana.

We will have a short loop, anticlockwise that will take us through a few short climbs before returning to the coast. We have included the Coll des Grau with its 18 switchbacks in only 4 km.

Dinner in Palma.

HOTEL:  Lindner Golf Resort Portals Nous

DAY 5: Cap de Formentor and more…

For the next four days, our riding will be concentrated in the Serra de Tramuntana, from one point to the other, this mountain range has some of the most spectacular rides you can find in the Mediterranean islands.

Note that, even though some of the rides we propose are long and a bit hard, we will have options for shorter rides without missing the most iconic climbs. For the ones that have been with us, you know we always come with the right riding for the different levels that may be in a group.

Today we will start with a short transfer to Crestatx where we will start our ride to Port de Pollenca, from there the 17km road to Cap de Formentor is a real wonder, expect amazing views when arriving at the end of the road and see the Mediterranean Sea.

After a well-deserved coffee stop, we will retrace our steps and ride up to Coll de Femenia followed by Coll de sa Batalla. Our ride will end in the town of Inca, famous for its shoe craftsmanship and wineries. Transfer back to our hotel by van.

DAY 6: SFIDA Valldemossa loop.

A truly SFIDA signature ride today…a lot of climbing…all day!

Multiple climbs on another incredible ride in Mallorca. Today we propose a loop that will take us to Andratx and then along the coast, over the mountains of course to the beautiful town of Valldemossa.

Today’s ride is very scenic, with a lot of short climbs and beautiful vistas toward the sea and mountains.

Valldemossa has also a port, and to get there we will descend to sea level via some tight hairpins.

From Valldemossa, we will start heading back via Esporles and Coll des Grau.

A fantastic ride deserves a great dinner!

Day 6
90km / 1,725m

DAY 7:  Sa Calobra, Mallorca’s most famous climb.

Early transfer back to Inca to start another scenic ride, starting with climbing the Coll de sa Batalla from the side we descended the day before.

We will then ride towards Sa Calobra, without a doubt, the most iconic stretch of road in Mallorca! The climb back up to Coll dels Reis is a great way to return to the Serra de Tramuntana range.

After great pictures in Sa Calobra, we will continue our ride, next is the Alt de Puigmajor, which is the highest climb in Mallorca and our last climb of the day, before descending to sea level and starting climbing the also iconic Coll de Soller, this climb, has 50 hairpins between the climb and descend back towards Palma.

Day 7

HOTEL:  Lindner Golf Resort Portals Nous

DAY 8: Coll de Soller and its 50 hairpins.

Retracing our steps today, we will head up to Coll de Soller from the south, this is such a unique and beautiful climb that is worth climbing from both sides.

From the top, we will descend to Port de Soller and then start riding towards Andratx along the coast in the opposite direction we did days earlier.

We will stop at a few places to enjoy the amazing views over the Mediterranean.

This will be a great way to end our riding in Mallorca, a place that never ceases to surprise us with how beautiful it is. Riding a bike is the way to discover this stunning island.

CANCELLATION POLICY:

Adapting to the changes in international change after the COVID-19 pandemic, and incoordination, with most of the hotel’s terms and conditions, we are adjusting our cancellation policy accordingly as follows:

120 days before the trip starts – the return of your deposit minus any expenses that we may be unable to reimburse.

90 days before the trip starts – partial refund of the amount of the trip less the 300 Euros cancellation fee, plus any amount that we can’t recover from Hotels, and other costs that we may have already incurred in the trip preparation.

Less than 60 days before the trip starts – no amount will be refunded. We will, however, try to credit as much as possible towards a future trip. This depends on the amount that we can get back from the hotels and other costs that we have already incurred in the trip preparation.

We highly recommend to contract travel insurance as soon you pay the deposit and buy your international flights.

Make sure your travel insurance covers:

  • Refund of the amounts paid in case you need to cancel for any reason.
  • Covers the cost of possible damages to your rental bike. Check our T&C for this.

For these reasons, we won’t be holding any spots until the full deposit has been paid.

Hotels are now more strict with how many rooms they are willing to have on hold for groups, so until deposit payments are made we won’t be able to confirm your spot.
