Main Information
VISIT BASILICATA AND CALABRIA WITH SFIDA CYCLING.
On this new Italian trip, we will take you to the deep South of this amazing country.
The regions of Basilicata and Calabria have a good number of interesting places to visit. We will start by riding along the mountainous area near Potenza, the Dolomiti Lucane. This unknown region has some amazing climbs and beautiful villages.
Afterwards, we will ride south to Calabria until we reach Tropea, by the Mediterranean Coast. This amazing town is a good base for some inland riding.
The last part of our trip is in the Aspromonte, this small mountain range at the very tip of the Italian boot-shaped peninsula, is another great place to visit on a bike.
As we are in Italy, expect the food and coffee to be excellent as well.
SFIDA Cycling provides only first-class support, so you just need to train and join us. We take care of all the details to ensure that any trip with us is an unforgettable experience.
Note: In a couple of days after this trip finishes, we will start our SFIDA Sicily trip. This could be a great opportunity to join the next SFIDA trip and continue your SFIDA dream.

CANCELLATION POLICY:
Adapting to the changes in international travel after the COVID-19 pandemic, we are adjusting our cancellation policy accordingly as follows:
120 days before the trip starts – the return of your deposit minus any expenses that we may not be able to reimburse.
90 days before the trip starts – partial refund of the amount of the trip less the 400 Euros cancellation fee, plus any amount that we can’t recover from Hotels, and other costs that we may have already incurred in the trip preparation.
Less than 60 days before the trip starts, no amount will be refunded. We will, however, try to credit as much as possible towards a future trip. This depends on the amount that we can get back from the hotels and other costs that we have already incurred in the trip preparation.
We highly recommend contracting travel insurance as soon as you pay the deposit and buy your international flights.
Make sure your travel insurance covers:
- Refund of the amounts paid in case you need to cancel for any reason.
- Covers the cost of possible damages to your rental bike. Check our T&C for this.
For these reasons, we won’t be holding any spots until the full deposit has been paid.
Hotels are now more strict with how many rooms they are willing to have on hold for groups, so until deposit payments are made, we won’t be able to confirm your spot.
Itinerary
After meeting the SFIDA Cycling trip at Napoli Airport, we will travel to our hotel in Potenza.
Upon arrival, we will check in and have lunch and have a trip orientation meeting.
Once we have prepared our bikes, we will take our first ride on the trip.
Potenza is one of the highest provincial capitals in Italy, about 800m high. We are surrounded by mountains.
33km/830m.
Climb: Passo Croce dello Scrivano.
Hotel: Tourist Hotel.
Today, we will leave Potenza and head towards Castelmezzano.
Castelmezzano is one of the Borghi Più Belli d'Italia (BPBI) in the Basilicata region. During this trip, we will visit a few villages that belong to this list.
The ride is never flat and mostly on quiet roads.
We will spend a couple of nights in this nice village in the heart of the Dolomiti Lucane.
69km/1,955m.
Hotel: Hotel Dolomiti.
Staying for a couple of days in Castelmezzano allows us to enjoy the Dolomiti Lucane in a more relaxed way.
Today, we will do a ride covering some beautiful parts of the National Park.
This includes a visit to Pietrapertosa, another BPBI village, in a very scenic location.
61km/1,845m.
Climbs: Campomaggiore, Albano di Lucania.
Hotel: Hotel Dolomiti.
For the next couple of days, we will be riding in some of the most remote areas in Basilicata.
The closer we get to Calabria, the quieter the towns and roads are.
On the way to San Chirico Raparo, we will stop at Guardia Perticara (BPBI).
85km/2,230m.
Hotel: Villa Rosamaria.
Accommodation in this part of Italy is scarce and hard to find. To reach our next destination, today we will have to do a longer ride. The clients who prefer to do part of the ride in the van are welcome.
The ride involves some amazing riding, and the highest point of the day is at the top of the Colle del Dragone, at 1,600m.
We will end our ride in Calabria, in the beautiful village of Morano Calabro (BPBI).
113km/2,750m.
Hotel: Albergo Villa San Domenico.
In compensation for yesterday's long ride, today we will have a short ride.
This ride involves visiting Altomonte (BPBI).
After we end our ride, we will have a two-hour transfer to the stunning town of Tropea (BPBI), where we will spend a couple of nights.
47km/790m.
Hotel: Hotel Rocca della Sena.
Today we will enjoy a great morning ride, a loop starting south of Tropea and then climbing inland via the multi switchbacks of Monte Poro.
Afterwards, we will descend back to Tropea via Fitili.
In the afternoon, we will visit this beautiful and scenic town and will enjoy a seafood dinner, for which Tropea is famous.
51km/1,170m.
Hotel: Hotel Rocca della Sena.
We will transfer to Bagnara Calabra and start our last ride.
Today's ride will take us from sea level up to the Aspromonte National Park, the highest point will be at Sella Entrata, 1,400m high.
From there, it will be an amazing descent to Reggio Calabria, Calabria's biggest city and an excellent place to end another epic trip.
75km/1,965m.
Hotel: Hotel Mendiblu.
