From imperial Vienna to spirited Belgrade, this Danube ride is a journey through the heart of Europe.
And what better way to do it than on an SFIDA Cycling trip? With our full support and attention to detail, we always choose the best places to stay, and, most importantly, the food is part of the experience.
The river Danube will be our constant companion, guiding us through five countries and a changing landscape of capitals, castles, vineyards, plains and fortified towns.
We will begin in Vienna, where grand boulevards, coffee houses and classical elegance set the tone for an unforgettable adventure.
Bratislava, Slovakia’s capital, will be our second stop, with its old town and castle overlooking the Danube.
From there, the route slips into Hungary, following river paths and country roads towards Győr, Esztergom and the great Danube Bend.
Budapest then delivers a spectacular mid-trip highlight, with bridges, thermal baths, Parliament and a skyline that feels made for arrival by bike.
South of the Hungarian capital, the ride becomes broader and quieter, moving through farmland, riverside settlements and big open skies.
Crossing into Croatia, Osijek brings elegance and calm, with riverside promenades, historic streets and the relaxed charm of eastern Croatia.
The last stage to Belgrade is full of anticipation, with every kilometre adding to the sense of achievement.
It is a ride of contrasts: imperial capitals and small villages, smooth cycleways and quiet roads, ancient sites and modern stories.
Above all, it is an amazing way to experience travel from Western to Eastern Europe—slowly, actively and with the Danube leading you all the way.

Cancellation policy
In response to post-COVID changes in international travel, and in line with most hotels’ terms and conditions, our cancellation policy is as follows:
- 120 or more days before the trip starts: Your deposit will be refunded, minus any non-reimbursable expenses.
- Less than 90 days before the trip starts: No refund or credit available. Make sure your travel insurance covers all the SFIDA Cycling trip costs.
Travel insurance
We strongly recommend purchasing travel insurance as soon as you pay your deposit and book your international flights. Please make sure your policy covers the following:
- International flights.
- Reimbursement of amounts paid if you need to cancel for any reason.
- Damage to your rental bike (see our terms and conditions).
Reserving your spot
To reserve your place, the full deposit must be paid. Because hotels are now stricter about holding rooms for groups, we cannot hold or confirm a spot until the deposit has been received.
Itinerary
Meet the SFIDA Cycling team at the Voco Vienna Prater Hotel in the early afternoon. After a trip briefing, we will prepare the bikes so they are ready for the first ride towards Belgrade.
Later in the afternoon, we will explore Vienna’s UNESCO-listed city centre before enjoying dinner at a traditional restaurant.
Vienna and Bratislava are Europe’s closest capital cities, making this a memorable cross-border ride.
Along the way, we will visit places of historical interest, including Carnuntum, a Roman settlement on the lower Danube and one of Austria’s most important ancient sites.
Nearby Hainburg an der Donau also offers several notable historic landmarks.
We aim to arrive in Bratislava in the early afternoon, leaving time to explore its attractive city centre.

We leave Bratislava and, after around 15 km of riding, cross into Hungary—the third country of the trip.
From this point, two cycle paths are available; we will follow the route that takes us directly to Győr, our destination for the day.
The afternoon is set aside to explore Győr, a beautiful city at the junction of three rivers in northwest Hungary’s Western Transdanubia region.
Győr is known for its Baroque architecture and, after Budapest and Sopron, has one of Hungary’s richest collections of historic monuments.
The Old Town follows an irregular grid of straight streets leading to stately squares such as Bécsi Kapu Tér, the Viennese Gate.

Today’s ride takes us closer to the Danube as we continue along the Hungarian side of the river, with Slovakia often visible across the water.
Most of the route follows quiet cycleways, with occasional stretches on small roads. The terrain should make it manageable to cover the distance to Esztergom while still leaving time to visit the town’s key landmarks.
As we approach Esztergom, the ride finishes with a memorable view of the town’s monumental basilica, Hungary’s largest church, perched above the Danube.

We begin the day by crossing the Danube on the iconic Maria Valeria Bridge. The route briefly takes us back into Slovakia before returning to Hungary—a fitting reminder of how closely connected this region of Europe is.
Around halfway through the ride, we reach the charming town of Vác. Here, we will pause to visit the cathedral and the Arch of Triumph before continuing south towards Budapest.
We plan to arrive in Budapest in the early afternoon, leaving the rest of the day to explore one of Europe’s most beautiful capital cities and its many historic landmarks.

We leave Budapest and continue south towards Belgrade, following the Danube deeper into Hungary.
The ride begins along the river before crossing a bridge that keeps us on the left bank of the Danube.
From there, a chain of small Hungarian villages leads us into a more agricultural landscape as we make our way to Dunaújváros.
Once a small town, Dunaújváros grew rapidly in the early 1950s as part of an ambitious national industrial development plan, becoming one of Hungary’s most important modern industrial centres.

Today brings the longest ride of the trip. Riders who would prefer a shorter day can choose to ride either the first or second half of the route.
After leaving Dunaújváros, we cross the Danube and continue along the river’s left bank.
The route passes through a mostly agricultural landscape, with a small number of towns and villages along the way.
We finish in Baja, a historic town whose character has been shaped over the centuries by different kingdoms, empires and countries.

After several days in Hungary, today we ride into Croatia, the fourth country of the trip.
We leave Baja and continue along the Danube’s left bank before crossing the river by ferry to Mohács.
Soon after Mohács, we cross the border into Croatia. From there, we follow the route that leads us towards Osijek, the historic centre of Slavonia.
Slavonia is known for its rich history, generous food traditions, broad landscapes and riverside scenery.
Osijek combines classic sights, natural beauty and the welcoming character of a smaller local community, making it an inviting stop in eastern Croatia.

Today brings another memorable stage as we ride from Croatia into Serbia, the fifth and final country of the trip.
We begin by riding to Vukovar, one of Croatia’s most historically significant Danube cities.
Under Habsburg influence, Vukovar grew into an important centre for administration, trade and culture. Its noble residences, churches and public buildings still reflect this refined urban heritage.
The city’s modern identity was deeply shaped by the 1991 Battle of Vukovar, whose destruction made it a powerful symbol in contemporary Croatian history.
For part of the ride, we follow the Danube on the Croatian side, with Serbia visible across the river to the north.
At around kilometre 80, we cross into Serbia and continue towards Novi Sad.
Novi Sad, Serbia’s second-largest city, sits on the banks of the Danube in the northern region of Vojvodina.
Known for its colourful old town, lively cultural scene and impressive Petrovaradin Fortress, Novi Sad has become one of Serbia’s most popular destinations.

Our final ride takes us to Belgrade, one of Europe’s most fascinating capital cities.
The route stays on the right bank of the Danube, passing mainly through agricultural areas and small towns.
We recommend staying at least one extra day in Belgrade. As one of Europe’s oldest continuously inhabited places, the city has an extraordinary history and plenty to explore.
It will be a fitting and memorable place to end another epic SFIDA Cycling trip.

After breakfast, we will provide a transfer to Belgrade Nikola Tesla Airport (BEG).
We expect to arrive at the airport by 11:00, so please plan your onward travel accordingly.
